Amnesty for Illegal Aliens

This doesn’t have much to do with our travels but the law was passed without much fanfare and I thought it interesting.

Finally, a law has been passed to provide for amnesty for illegal aliens. The amnesty program will apply from January 9, 2017, to December 19, 2017.

Foreigners requesting their “regularization” per this program need to present the following in original and copy:

  1. Immigration request letter stating their desire to participate in program and explaining how they became illegal
  2.  Passport
  3. Immigration document if the person had one

The procedure for the person requesting the regularization of their immigration status is the following:

Present documents at Immigration, where they will have a hearing on the spot or set the date for a future hearing. The future date shall not be more than 10 business days after the papers are turned in.

  1. Immigration will make a written record of the hearing and go over all the paperwork presented
  2. Immigration then has 30 days to give a response. If the response is positive then they shall issue a temporary resident document good for four years
  3. Once the person has the document they may request work permission as well as documents for family members
  4. For the issuance of the document the person will need the original positive resolution and a copy, 3 photos, and payment of fees.

Immigration may not arrest anybody who applies for the program due to their having an irregular status.

How ’bout that, huh?

Now, for our extreme conservative readers north of the Rio Bravo who are clutching their chests and hyperventilating, this is not a U.S. law. This is a Mexican law to grant amnesty to illegal aliens in Mexico, most of whom, are U.S. and Canadian citizens.

How ’bout that.

We do know two people from the U.S. who came here on 180 day tourist cards. That was in 2002. They don’t make a big deal out of being illegal here unless you are committing a crime. (Please hold the comments about being here illegally is a crime.) They’ve just decided to fix it. Make them residents, get them on the tax rolls, and move on. It doesn’t seem all that complicated.
